Can anyone become a programmer?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Jun. 12, 2023

Yes, anyone can become a programmer. You simply need to have a desire to program, plus the time and availability it takes to learn basic programming languages or complete education in programming. While holding a degree is not required to become a programmer, it can be crucial for advancement and does help when applying for new jobs.

On average, it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months to learn a single programming language. There are many different programming languages, and each of them have their own methods and elements. Luckily, there are similarities between languages, which can make some of them easier to pick up than others. Learning programming languages generally becomes easier and quicker as a programmer learns more and more.

In school you can learn these languages in a more structured environment while also enjoying the opportunity to make connections and network. Universities often offer internship programs to help you better prepare for entering the workforce upon graduation.
