Can you become a cop at 40?

By Justin Parker - Mar. 13, 2023

Yes, you can become a cop at 40. However, you still must meet the various requirements and qualifications it takes to become a police officer. In addition, most United States police departments have age requirements in the 21 to 35 years of age range. But there are some police departments that do not have any age requirements or age maximums over 40.

If you are able to find a police department that does not have strict age requirements, you will still need to:

  • Go through the application process

  • Pass physical fitness tests

  • Pass written exams

  • Complete background checks

  • Pass mental health exams
