Do RNs or LPNs get paid more?

RNs are paid more than LPNs. A registered nurse or RN averages around $73,300 a year, while a licensed practical nurse or LPN averages around $44,849.

The biggest factor in why RNs earn more than LPNs is that RNs have a much more hands-on role when it comes to patient care, compared to an LPN who is there to essentially assist RNs and doctors.

It also takes longer to become an RN compared to an LPN. It takes between 2 to 4 years to become an RN. Most RNs have at least a bachelor's degree of science in nursing (BSN) or higher.

Conversely, a career as an LPN only requires a one-year diploma or certificate. Most LPN programs take between 1 to 2 years to complete. Both LPNs and RNs must take a state license exam.

The additional education and training allow RNs to assess and develop care plans with doctors, while LPNs focus on caring for patients and following the care plan laid out by the RN or doctor.
