How do you become a professional golfer?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

To become a professional golfer, you need to climb the ranks of golf pros, become exceptional at golf, and compete as an amateur. For more on each of these steps and other helpful tips on becoming a professional golfer, use this guide:

  • Climb the ranks of golf pros. Many professional golfers start as golf pros before they turn professional.

This allows you to hone your skills, practice often, and constantly be immersed in the world of golf.

Here are the different kinds of golf pros from the lowest ranking to the highest ranking:

    • Head Pros

    • Teaching Pros

    • Mini Tour Pros

    • Non-PGA Tour Professionals

    • PGA Tour Professionals

Many of the heads and teaching pros work for exclusive golf courses. These provide invaluable opportunities to develop your golfing abilities and often provide chances to participate in tournaments that can improve your ranking.

  • Become exceptional at golf. Golf is extremely competitive, and very few people can turn pro (we'll touch on that more in a minute), so you need to train relentlessly and live and breathe the sport of golf.

You should try to find a good coach and be very disciplined regarding how often you practice, play, and compete.

To become a professional golfer, you must put countless hours into perfecting every aspect of your golf game.

  • Compete as an amateur. As soon as you, or your coach, feels you are ready, you should start entering amateur tournaments.

Here are some common and great tournaments to enter once you are ready:

    • USGA events

    • US Open

    • US Amateur

    • US Mid-Am

    • US 4-Ball

These tournaments bring in the best up-and-coming players worldwide, so be prepared for fierce competition.

Once you have excelled as an amateur and won enough tournaments, you can attempt to enter the PGA and compete as a pro. Keep in mind that the PGA tour only allows 125 pro golfers on tour at any given time. It is extremely difficult to get on the PGA tour.

  • Challenges to keep in mind. Citing the Professional Athlete Index, only one out of 51,346 people who attempt to become a pro golfer succeeds.

Professional golf is one of the toughest and most competitive careers there is. To turn pro takes a minimum of 7 to 10 years of hard work, dedication, and patience.

Amateur golfers with this goal should have five out of ten competitive rounds in state and nationally-ranked amateur competitions be scored below par, and their highest score should not go above +3 par.

If you can't meet this requirement, you will not even be considered to play in tournaments. The cuts in pro golf tournaments range from a high of 2 over par to a low of 5 under par.
