How far back does a background check go?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

A background check is limited to convictions that occurred in the last seven to ten years. If anything occurred before then, potential employees could choose to disclose that information, but it does not come up during a background check.

Some background checks go back further, depending on federal and state laws and what is being searched. There are various background checks, with different purposes and lengths depending on the position someone is applying for.

Some career paths, especially though involving security, require more intensive background checks than others.
