How hard is it to become a gynecologist?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

It is very difficult to become a gynecologist. Like many other specialized medical careers, candidates obtain multiple degrees and several years of training before becoming licensed gynecologists.

All aspiring gynecologists must earn an undergraduate degree from an accredited college. Majors such as biology and physiology and biochemistry are well suited to prepare students for the MCAT entrance exam. After graduation, students will take the MCAT exam, which will largely determine their acceptance into a medical school.

Earning a degree from a medical school is the next required step. Medical schools combine coursework with clinical rotations over the course of four years. Once you have earned your medical degree, you are able to apply for a residency program.

Candidates must be licensed before entering a residency program. The USMLE is an exam used in the United States to license medical professionals. The exam is costly, about $1,000 per step, and is completed over the course of three years.

After becoming licensed, candidates become resident doctors. While working in their residency, new doctors begin to gain hands-on experience in their special area of focus, such as gynecology. The residency lasts four years and is the final training stage for aspiring gynecologists.

Many gynecologists seek board certification upon completing their residency. The ABOG is the certifying body and administers a two-part exam to those seeking certification.
