How hard is it to become a medical physicist?

By Roger Raber - Jun. 13, 2023

It is very difficult to become a medical physicist. The education required and time necessary to become a certified medical physicist calls for rigorous study and a willingness to invest a great deal of time over a number of years.

Aspiring medical physicists must earn their bachelor's degree in physics or a related field before pursuing a master's degree in medical physics. The process of earning both degrees typically takes five to six years and involves a rigorous curriculum. Some candidates will go on to pursue their Ph.D.

Those who choose to enter the field with a master's degree must be certified by the American Board of Radiology. The certification exam consists of 298 questions administered over a seven-hour period, and focuses on one of four specialized areas of medical physics, including diagnostic radiology.
