How hard is it to become a nutritionist?

Most nutritionists have only a bachelor's degree in nutrition, so unlike other professions in the health field, they don't have to pay as much for school and do not have to attend more than four years of college to practice.

• Tasks. Some common tasks include working with patients to regulate their eating schedules, educating patients and the public about the importance of a healthy diet, and assisting athletes with meal plans and other wellness strategies to improve performance.
• Education. Most nutritionists and dietitians have bachelor's degrees in either nutrition or dietetics. Bachelor's degrees in food and nutrition, food service systems management, or other related areas, are also acceptable.
• Exams. In addition to getting the proper education, most states require you to pass the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) exam to become a registered dietician. Many states also require you to gain an internship at a dietician practice, sometimes before passing the CDR exam. Nutritionists may also have to pass an exam, depending on their state.
• Certifications. There are also specialized certifications you may obtain as a nutritionist or dietician. While these can help in terms of job prospects and salary, they are not a requirement.
