How hard is it to become a PE teacher?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 15, 2022

It is not hard to become a PE teacher. Becoming a PE teacher requires you to earn at least a bachelor's degree and complete a student-teaching program. Earning your bachelor's degree takes four years to complete and the student-teaching program takes roughly a year. You can complete both at the same time if you choose.

PE teachers must also earn a state teacher certification. Requirements for eligibility to take the exam vary by state, and there are various categories of state teacher certifications depending on the grade level you want to teach. You can pursue certification in either:

  • Early childhood

  • Elementary

  • Secondary

  • K - 12

After passing your certification exam, you can apply for your teaching license and apply for PE teacher positions.
