How long does it take to become a junior graphic designer?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 10, 2022

After graduating from high school, it takes four to five years to become a junior graphic designer. This timeline is based on candidates securing a college degree and obtaining entry-level employment in the field of design.

Pursuing a degree in graphic design from a college or university will take between four and five years. Over 77% of graphic designers working in the field hold a bachelor's degree.

For individuals able to secure internships organized through their college, this process may take somewhat longer; however, the connections gained through the internship can be very valuable.

Because a junior graphic designer is considered an entry-level position, for those with zero to three years of design experience, most candidates are hired directly out of college.

Some, less than 7% of candidates for these positions, will go on to earn a master's degree in graphic design. For these individuals, the timeline for employment increases to as much as six years after graduating from high school.
