How many hours can a 16-year-old work in New Jersey?
A 16-year-old in New Jersey can work 3 hours per day for 18 hours per week when school is in session. When school is not in session, they may work up to 8 hours per day and no more than 40 hours per week.
Minors are also not allowed to start work earlier than 6 AM and can end work no later than 11 PM, and when school is in session, they must not end work later than 11 PM.
This is the law for general employment opportunities for minors in New Jersey. General employment includes mercantile establishments, golf caddying, private bowling alleys, offices, gas stations, garages, and other places or means of gainful occupations unless otherwise specified.
Street trade jobs. Street trade jobs follow the same guidelines for minors in New Jersey.
Street trades include these activities: sales, offers for sale, soliciting for, collecting for, displaying, or distributing any articles, goods, merchandise, commercial service, posters, circulars, newspapers, or magazines on any street or other public place or from house to house.
Agriculture. In the agriculture industry, a minor at or above 16 may work 10 hours daily, six days a week, while school is in session if they are working on a family-owned and operated farm.
