How many hours can a minor work in Oklahoma?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Mar. 13, 2023

In Oklahoma, a minor can work up to 18 hours a week. In Oklahoma, a minor with work-hour restrictions is defined as someone under 16. A minor who is 16 or 17 years old may not work any overtime, so they can only work a maximum of 40 hours per work week.

For workers under 16 in Oklahoma, you cannot work more than 3 hours a day on a school day. You also cannot work more than 8 hours a day when school is not in session, and the total work hours cannot be over 18 hours for a given week.

When school is not in session, or if the person is not enrolled, a minor can work up to 40 hours in one week. There are limits to working hours for minors under 16. They cannot work before 7 AM or after 7 PM. June 1st through Labor Day, they can work until 9 PM.

It is important to note that Federal law states that minors cannot work after 7 PM when school is in session and 9 PM when school is not. They also cannot work before 7 AM at any time. Federal law also defines a minor as someone under 18, so while Oklahoma does not have restrictions on 16 and 17-year-olds, federal law does.
