How many hours can a student work?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

A student can only work a set amount of hours in a state if they are a minor. Minor laws concerning working hours vary from state to state.

Generally speaking, in most states, when school is in session, a minor can work 3 to 4 hours on days that they have school. Their total hours for work during a school week are usually capped at around 18 to 40 hours.

States also have laws about how early or late a minor can work while school is in session. These laws vary from state to state as well.

When school is not in session, student minors are able to work up to 40 hours in a week but will still be limited in terms of how early or late they can work.

Students over the age of 17 can work as many hours in a given week as they like. There are no laws pertaining to the number of hours an adult can work, except those that involve overtime hours and mandatory rest periods.

Students in college are advised not to work more than 30 to 35 hours a week, as any more can have a negative impact on their studies.
