This question is about what a pediatrician does.
A pediatrician works a variety of different hours; this depends on several factors, including if they run a private practice or work in a hospital and if they are on call.
On average, most pediatricians work between 40 and 60 hours weekly. This is the average; however, about a quarter of pediatricians have work weeks that consist of 61 to 80 hours. Pediatricians may put in individual shifts of as few as 6 hours and as much as 20 hours.
While most pediatricians range in the 40 to 60-hour work week, it is not uncommon for a pediatrician to work 100+ hours in a week. These long work weeks are mostly done by hospital pediatricians during doctor shortages or other emergency scenarios.
Another data point to look at is age. Pediatricians over the age of 60 tend to work less than their younger colleagues. Pediatricians age 60 and above average less than 40 hours during a given work week.
Pediatricians that run private practices also can have a variety of different hours. Generally, though, they work from 9 am - 5 pm on weekdays and come in on the weekends if a medical emergency demands.
