How many years does it take to be a dentist?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

It takes at least seven years to become a dentist. After achieving a bachelor's degree, you must attend a dental program. There are accelerated programs, but it is very difficult to be accepted into these schools since they are few.

There are sixty-eight currently-accredited dental schools within the United States, and all are four-year programs. The University of the Pacific Dugoni School of Dentistry is the only one that offers a three-year program.

Most dental programs require a bachelor's degree, and a couple offer admissions after two or three years of undergraduate studies.

Dental schools do not ask for specific majors to be accepted, but they require certain courses to be taken beforehand. These courses are primarily based on science due to the medical nature of the field.

Once these courses are achieved, you are required to take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT) and have letters of recommendation, a dental school personal statement, and relevant extracurriculars.
