How much do panhandlers make?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

Panhandlers make about $10 per hour, on average. This varies greatly depending on what state the panhandler is in. In California, panhandlers reportedly made anywhere from $10 to $25 per hour. In some cases, panhandlers were receiving food, beverages, clothing, and other supplies in addition to cash.

A study done by David Spears, a graduate of George Fox University revealed that he could make an average of $11.10 per hour panhandling in Oregon City. This was higher than the minimum wage of $8.95 per hour. On his worst day, David averaged $5.13 per hour and on his best day, he averaged $24.63 per hour.

David found that 1 out of every 59 people driving by gave money. Middle-aged people (between 25 and 49 years old) gave much more than older or younger people. There was not much difference between men and women. Some offered jobs or rides and others gave gift cards and homeless care packages.
