How to become a mentor
To become a mentor, you don't need any special skills, just an ability to listen and offer friendship, guidance, and encouragement to a young person growing up today. There are several steps you can take, however, to get yourself ready for a mentorship position including - building your area of expertise, deciding on a mentoring style, joining mentoring organizations, completing a mentorship program, branding yourself as a mentor, and college / early career forms and via networking.
Becoming a mentor can be a very rewarding experience. There's a great saying from the wonderful musician Phil Collins - "In learning we teach and in teaching we learn." By being a mentor, you provide a sounding board for rising stars to learn from prior direction and experience so that they can make better decisions in similar scenarios
There are many different types of mentors. If you are interested in becoming a business or career mentor then you will first need to complete the educational requirements and gain experience in the field. These mentors provide an extremely important transfer of knowledge within your organization so that the next generation doesn't spend valuable time repeating some of the mistakes made by others.
Here are some steps to becoming a mentor:
Identify your area of expertise. Think about the skills and knowledge you have that you can share with others.
Decide on your mentoring style. Determine how you want to mentor. Will it be a one-on-one relationship, group mentoring, or online mentoring?
Join a mentoring organization. Look for a mentoring organization that aligns with your mentoring style and expertise. A good place to start is mentoring.org.
Apply to become a mentor. Submit your application to the mentoring program of your choice. Be sure to include your qualifications and experience.
Attend training and orientation. If accepted, attend the training and orientation sessions to learn more about the program and how to be an effective mentor.
Start mentoring. Begin mentoring and make a positive impact on someone's life! Remember to be patient, encouraging, and supportive.
