How to handle disrespect in the workplace

  • Let the coworker know you feel disrespected

Your first option of resource in this situation is to talk with the person you feel is disrespecting you. This is important because it could be a misunderstanding or miscommunication that is resulting in you feeling disrespected. If they are unresponsive or persist in the behavior, then you should feel confident to take other steps to end the disrespect.

  • Inform your manager or superior

You should inform your manager or superior if the disrespectful behavior persists. It is important not to seem like you are telling on a coworker, but rather to convey in professional terms that the disrespect you are receiving is inhibiting your own work performance. Your superior is likely to take the matter seriously if you are professional in your communication.

  • File a complaint with HR

Depending on the severity of the disrespect, and if it could be considered harassment, you might want to file a complaint with HR. To file a complaint with HR, follow these steps:

  • Write down everything you can about the complaint. If possible, after the incident, write down as much information on the experience as possible.

  • Try to write the complaint when you are calm. If possible you should write your complaint when you are calm, and not when you are agitated.The key here is to remain objective and to state the facts pertaining to the conflict.

  • Keep it brief and professional. It is important to not write too long of a complaint, unless there have been many occurrences of harassment, illegal activity, or the breaking of company policies. 500 words or less is a good aim for a complaint that deals with one incident.

  • Get witness statements if possible. If there were other employees who witnessed the incident involved in your complaint you should ask them if you can use their official statements. You can make a section of the letter dedicated to this, if it makes there are a lot or if it makes it easier in any way.

  • Save a copy of the complaint and submit it to HR. After you are finished with your complaint make sure you save a copy for your own records. This can be useful if the incidents or related incidents occur in the future.

Here is one more helpful tip for dealing with disrespect in the workplace:

  • Stand up for yourself

It is important to stand up for yourself when you feel you are being disrespected. If the party involved sees you are not someone who lets people disrespect them, they will be more likely to stop the behavior. Keep in mind though, you still need to remain professional when standing up for yourself, this includes not raising your voice or making threats.
