A benefit of negotiating a salary over the phone is that you are able to use notes without your potential employer knowing. So beforehand, jot down any crucial information or things you want to touch on during the salary negotiation.

If you are going to be using more than just a notepad, such as incorporating documents that you might want to reference during the call, ensure that these are clearly spread out in front of you. You don't want to be scrambling to find a document while attempting to listen and keep up with the conversation.

Be confident but not arrogant

The majority of employees do not even try to negotiate their salaries, potentially missing out on hundreds or thousands of dollars over the course of their careers. You've made it to this point, so you should feel confident in your worth; however, it is important not to feel entitled to a specific number.

If your potential employer senses entitlement, they may take this as a form of arrogance and, at worst, offer you an even lower salary than they were planning on.
