How to thank your boss for recognition

By Justin Parker - Mar. 13, 2023

To thank your boss for recognition, you should thank them in person, but also go the extra mile with a personal touch and write a thank-you note to show just how much you appreciate their comments. Here are the steps to writing your boss a thank-you note for recognition:

  • Figure out your boss's style

It is a good idea to determine your boss's style before you write them a thank-you note for recognition. You should take into consideration how formal your boss is. If they tend to be more on the formal side, you should write a traditional note with a polite and professional tone. If your boss is on the casual side, feel free to make the note more unique and personal.

  • Choose a card

This also depends on your boss's distinctive style. You can choose a nice and tasteful thank-you card or something that contains humor. Don't go for the comedic approach unless you are close with your boss and you know they will appreciate it. You can also just choose to write the note on some of your own personal stationery.

  • Greeting

Next you should write an appropriate greeting. "Dear" is the most common and formal option, but you could also just choose to start off with your boss's first name, depending on how close you are. You base your greeting on your relationship to the boss, and the level of formality you want the note to have. Make sure you have the proper spelling of their name too.

  • The body of your thank you note

Here is the main portion of your note. A good way to start is by expressing gratitude for the recognition. Try to go into a little bit of detail to let them know how appreciative you are and what it means to you. You might even want to touch on how you plan to shoot even higher in terms of performance. This section can be 2 to 3 sentences and shouldn't be much longer.

  • Conclusion sentence

The last step in the writing process is to do a conclusion sentence. This one should not be too long, but should encapsulate the gratitude and other information you included in the body of the note. Think of it as a summary.

  • Closing phrase

To stick with formality it is customary to add a closing phrase before your signature. Some common options include:

  • Sincerely

  • Warm regards

  • With appreciation

  • Kind regards

  • Thank you

  • Respectfully

After writing the closing phrase you can sign the note. If you are doing a printed version you can include your name in typed form and then sign underneath when printed.

The last step is to proofread your note. It's just a note so it should not take long. This is necessary because you don't want your boss to receive a thank-you note that contains grammatical errors or typos, it can spoil the moment.
