Is a nurse anesthetist an RN?

By Zippia Team - Mar. 3, 2022

Yes, a nurse anesthetist is an RN. A nurse anesthetist is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN). They provide pain medication (anesthesia) care for patients before, during, and after surgery and are the highest-paid RNs.

To become an RN requires either an associate degree (ADN) or a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree and passing the National Council Licensure Exam (NCLEX-RN). In addition, an APRN must also complete a master's of science in nursing (MSN) degree, and by 2025, all nurse anesthetists will be required to have a doctoral degree.

To complete an APRN degree program, you will need to administer anesthesia under supervision in a clinical setting at a minimum of 600 times and complete around 2,500 clinical hours.

After completing your advanced degree program, you must pass a national certification exam through the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA).
