Occupational Therapist vs Speech Therapist

By Zippia Team - Aug. 22, 2022

An occupational therapist is a medical professional who treats patients from head to toe, while a speech therapist is a professional who is narrowly focused on treating complications that affect a patient's speech, language, and swallowing ability.

An occupational therapist is a professional who aims to help patients learn to complete tasks for independent living, as well as to carry out job functions in their lives in response to an injury or illness which results in a need for long-term or permanent adaptations.

It can also be in response to a permanent physical, mental or developmental disability. Their overall aim is to establish confidence in their patients in adapting to their disability.

Speech therapists are practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prevent communication and swallowing disorders. The primary goal of a speech therapist is to use therapeutic approaches to improve a patient's ability to communicate and/or swallow.

Here are the key differences between an occupational therapist and a speech therapist:

  • An occupational therapist may focus on any part of a patient's body that is injured or in recovery

  • A speech therapist focuses on treating complications with speech, language, and swallowing issues

  • Occupational therapists focus on the use of meaningful, goal-directed, personalized activity programs to restore independence and quality of life with a holistic focus on the client's whole life.

  • Speech therapists focus exclusively on patients swallowing ability or communication disorders and work out how to remediate them.

  • On average occupational therapists have slightly higher salaries than speech therapists.
