What are the four functions of management?

By - Apr. 2, 2023

The four functions of management are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. To be a successful manager, you must do all four while managing your work and team. These are the foundations of any professional managerial position. On top of this, there are other skills and specialized knowledge related specifically to the job you manage.

The concept of how management should interact with personnel was first developed by Henri Fayol in the early 1900s. He developed a general theory of business administration and management functions, which included the four functions of pillars of management: planning, organizing, leading, and controlling.

Without these four pillars of management supporting those other responsibilities, nothing is going to get done on time and within budget. If you're managing yourself or teams of workers, you need to understand these fundamentals of management, which are the basis of management skills.

The four functions of management:

  • Planning: Planning is the function of management that involves setting objectives and determining a course of action for achieving those objectives. It is a critical first step in the management process, as it sets the foundation for the other three management functions. Planning involves analyzing the current situation and determining where the organization wants to go and how it will get there.

  • Organizing: Organizing is the function of management that involves developing an organizational structure and allocating human resources to ensure the accomplishment of goals. It is the process of identifying and grouping activities, defining and delegating responsibility and authority, and establishing relationships to enable people to work most effectively together to accomplish objectives.

  • Leading: Leading is the function of management that involves motivating and directing the behavior of employees. It involves influencing and inspiring people to work towards the accomplishment of goals. Leaders create an environment that fosters creativity and innovation, encourages risk-taking, and rewards hard work and dedication.

  • Controlling: Controlling is the function of management that involves measuring performance and taking corrective action. It involves monitoring progress toward objectives, comparing actual performance against standards, and taking action to ensure that goals are achieved. Controlling also involves identifying areas for improvement and taking steps to ensure that employees are working efficiently and effectively.
