The qualifications for a dental assistant are graduation from an accredited dental assisting school, a certain number of clinical work experience hours, and obtaining certification.
All aspiring dental assistants should attend and graduate from a CODA-accredited dental assisting or dental hygiene program. They also must gain a certain amount of clinical experience in order to gain certification. This varies state by state but is generally around 3500 hours.
Certification can be obtained through the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB). The DANB requires the previously mentioned qualifications in order for a dental assistant to be certified.
