This question is about mortician certifications.
The qualifications of a mortician include completing at least an associate's degree in mortuary science and gaining one year of apprenticeship experience. Accreditation requirements vary from state to state so it is important to see what is required where you want to practice.
Some states require a bachelor's degree in lieu of an associate's degree. In both cases, be sure to check that your mortuary education is through an accredited program by the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE). After schooling, you must work under a licensed mortician for one to three years before becoming licensed.
There are three licensing tests to become an accredited mortician. The requirements of how many of the three are needed to be licensed vary from state to state. The tests are the National Board Exam (NBE), the State Board Exam (SBE), and your state's Laws, Rules, and Regulations (LRR) exam.
There is required continued education for accredited morticians. You must renew your license every 1-2 years. To keep your license up to date, you will need to complete courses through state-approved continuing education.
