The qualifications of a pediatrician are obtaining a medical degree, completing a residency, and passing the licensing requirements. You will begin your education with four years of undergraduate studies. Then, you will need to be accepted into a medical school where you will spend four years learning and preparing for your residency.

Pediatric residencies generally will take three years and consist of over 12,000 patient care hours. After completing residency, and depending on your state, you will need to make sure to look into licensing requirements. After you are licensed, you can begin practicing as a pediatrician.

After residency, some aspiring pediatricians may choose to complete a fellowship. This fellowship is additional training in a subspecialty such as developmental and behavioral pediatrics.
