What degree do you need to be a clinical therapist?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

You need a master's degree in counseling or a related field to be a clinical therapist. You are also required to obtain a license and practice under licensed supervision for approximately 3,000 hours. State exams are required and are usually administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC).

Most clinical therapists end up obtaining a Ph.D. This allows them to practice independently as well. There are also other certifications that can be obtained in specialty areas such as; school counselor, addictions counselor, and mental health counselor.

It is essential for a counselor to be licensed and continue their education to remain in practice and up-to-date. These requirements of education and licensure exist to protect the therapist and the patient, especially because you will work directly with the mental health of others.
