What degree do you need to be a conservationist?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

You need a bachelor's degree in agricultural science, biology, environmental science, or a related field to be a conservationist. These will all give you the skills necessary to begin your career, and will also give you an idea of where you want to specialize.

Choosing a specialization, such as working with a specific species or environment, will help you determine what will be required to begin working. Some specializations may require additional education or certifications. For example, if you choose to be a wildlife educator, you will need to complete additional courses and licensing in education.

As you begin work, you will gain the necessary experience to become a conservationist. You will most likely begin working in entry-level positions in the environmental science field, but with experience, you can pivot to a conservationist role. It could also be beneficial to pursue a master's degree to help you accelerate this advancement.
