What degree do you need to be a criminal lawyer?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

You need a law degree to be a criminal lawyer. There is not a specific bachelor's degree requirement to get into law school, but an undergraduate degree in criminal justice, criminology, or a related field can be extremely beneficial.

After entering law school, you will begin to gain the education and specialization required of criminal lawyers. You will also have opportunities to gain experience in different legal settings. Internships are extremely beneficial for aspiring criminal lawyers. These positions allow for hands-on experience working cases.

Post graduation, you should get a J.D. (Juris Doctorate). You will then need to pass the bar exam, which will require a solid understanding of law and practice. Once you pass the bar exam, you may apply for an attorney license. Then, you may begin working, although it may take more experience to work as a criminal lawyer.
