To be a data scientist, you need a bachelor's degree in data science, computer science, or a related field. While these are the common degrees typically held by people in data science positions, specific jobs in the field may require more or less education.

Some roles in data science do not require a degree. For these positions, applicants must simply exhibit a sufficient understanding of data science. Typically, college coursework is the simplest way to gain that understanding, but there are other methods to learn about the field without a college education.

There are also roles, typically more senior and more advanced positions, that require data scientists to hold at least a master's degree, and could even require a doctorate's degree. If you desire to eventually find yourself in one of those positions, pursuing additional degrees can be beneficial for your career growth and aspirations.
