What degree do you need to be a DBT therapist?

By Roger Raber - Feb. 20, 2023

You need a minimum of a master's degree in a mental health-related field to become a DBT therapist. DBT training and certification are offered to professionals in the mental health field.

Once you have secured your master's degree in mental health counseling or therapy, you may pursue training and certification in dialectical behavior therapy.

Certification in this therapeutic area takes six months and consists of four modules: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation.

As a certified mental health therapist, it is not necessary to hold a DBT certification to use the therapy on patients. Only one certifying body is associated with DBT therapy, limiting certification options. The cost of DBT training is approximately $2,500.
