What degree do you need to be a hairstylist?
You need an associate's degree or a certification from an accredited course to become a hairstylist. This profession also requires that graduates become licensed within the state where they intend to work.
Becoming a hair stylist involves two mandatory steps. Initially, you will enroll in an accredited course or degree program for cosmetology or hair styling. These courses are open to anyone sixteen years or older (ages may vary in some states) and involve approximately 1600 hours of coursework and hands-on experience.
These courses range in focus from science related to hair and skin to sanitation protocol and business coursework to help individuals open and manage their own shops.
After completing the required certified program or degree, individuals must then be licensed within the state where they intend to work. Licensure involves proof of the completion of an accredited program, as well as a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
You are then ready to take the written and skills evaluation tests administered by your state. This evaluation assesses your knowledge of hair styling skills as well as the laws particular to your state regarding health and safety standards.
