This question is about jeweler education.

What degree do you need to be a jeweler?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

You need a high school diploma to be a jeweler. However, continuing education degrees are an asset in this field. Nearly 43% of jewelers have a bachelor's degree, while only 25% have a high school diploma.

Technically speaking, a jeweler doesn't require anything more than a high school diploma. However, it is advised that an aspiring jeweler take some form of vocational, certificate, or degree training. Apprenticeships are another good path to becoming a jeweler. Jewelers of America offers four certifications that are recognized for career growth.

  • Certified Bench Jeweler Technician (CBJT)

  • Certified Bench Jeweler (CBJ)

  • Certified Senior Bench Jeweler (CSBJ)

  • Certified Master Bench Jeweler (CMBJ)

Taking art classes in high school will give you a perspective on your creativity. Completing a jewelry-making program that takes less than a year is a great way to gain knowledge and experience. It is also suggested that the prospective jeweler become familiar with CAD (computer-aided design), especially for jewelry design.

Other education options for an aspiring jeweler are degrees in Fine Arts and Jewelry Design, which can take two to four years. Regardless of which path is chosen, it is important to create a portfolio of work as you learn. Having a degree in this field allows you to advance further and faster in your career.
