What degree do you need to be a medical esthetician?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 16, 2022

You need a vocational certification in advanced skincare to become a medical esthetician. Obtaining initial licensure through a nationally recognized accreditation program is the typical route to being a medical esthetician.

Requirements can vary from state to state. However, every state has practice hours that are required. These hours generally range from 300 to 750 hours. Typically the program involves classroom study of skin analyses, disease, and techniques used to address skin conditions, as well as hands-on training.

Some states will accept apprenticeships in lieu of classroom training, but it involves many more practice hours. The hours for an apprenticeship range from 1000 to 2000 hours. You must also get approval from the state board prior to using an apprenticeship to gain licensure.

A master esthetician license is obtained through advanced training, which includes several hours of study beyond the required initial licensure requirements. Many medical employers require their estheticians to have a master's esthetician license due to the specialized nature of their setting.

Master Estheticians must also pass the Nation Advanced Esthetics Practical Examination.

Medical Estheticians work directly with clients. These locations can include doctor's offices, hospitals, spas, and more. They are constantly consulting, educating, and technically applying skills. Although they work under medical supervision, it is important that they are well-certified in their responsibilities to safely and effectively perform their duties.
