What degree do you need to be a nail technician?
Although there is no degree required to become a nail technician, aspiring nail technicians do need to complete a certificate in cosmetology.
Most programs require you to be at least 16 years old and hold a GED or be a high school graduate. However, there are some programs offered through high schools and junior colleges that can be begun while pursuing a high school diploma.
The cosmetology programs allow you to experience hands-on training on a range of topics, including hair styling, esthetics, and nail technology. Oftentimes, you may work in a salon at your cosmetology school, where you will have training on real clients. You will also be required to attend traditional classroom instruction.
After completion, you must pass the certification requirements in whichever state in which you plan on practicing. Most states include an exam to meet their requirements, but some will simply require completing cosmetology school. After certification, you may legally begin working as a nail technician.
It is important to note that nail technology is a career that depends on the understanding of current trends. Because of this, continual education is recommended to stay current.
