What degree do you need to be a pastor?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

You need a bachelor's degree in religious studies to be a pastor. Bachelor's degrees in theology or religious education are also acceptable. If you want to become a lead pastor you should also seek to obtain your master's degree in religious studies, theology, or religious education.

Pastors must have an in-depth understanding of Biblical doctrine and a strong command of knowledge about the text of the Bible. Biblical doctrine details the role of the church, and the philosophy and history of religion.
