What degree do you need to be a pathologist?
There are multiple steps and degrees required to become a pathologist. These steps include both college and medical school degrees.
While many medical schools require a bachelor's degree as a prerequisite when applying, some do not. These medical schools look only at relevant coursework that has been completed in the fields of biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Candidates must also pass the MCAT and enroll in an accredited medical school.
After graduating from medical school and earning a PhD., you must complete a pathology residency. Pathology residencies focus on anatomic pathology and clinical pathology. Graduates can focus on only one area in which the residency is three years in length or both areas resulting in a four-year residency.
An additional step, although not necessarily a requirement, is board certification. This certification is obtained by passing examinations in one or both areas of pathology. Board certification is almost always necessary for employment as a pathologist in hospitals, clinics, or educational institutions.
