By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

To be a skincare specialist, you typically need to complete a nine-month accredited program and pass the National Esthetics Examination.

A skincare specialist is a licensed esthetician. An esthetician has completed a training program in skin care and can provide services such as facials, waxing, and other treatments.

To become a licensed esthetician, you will need to complete an accredited training program. These programs typically last around nine months and include both classroom instruction and hands-on training. After completing an accredited program, you will need to pass the National Esthetics Examination.

The day-to-day responsibilities of a skin specialist, or esthetician, mostly involve using different processes and techniques to cleanse, treat and repair the condition of the skin. Unlike dermatologists, whose work is mostly medicinal, the work of a skin specialist is purely cosmetic.

There are some opportunities to find employment in a physician's office, but typically, you can get hired as a skin specialist in beauty parlors, salons, or spas.

As a skincare specialist, you will be responsible for providing clients with:

  • Facials

  • Massages

  • Chemical peels

  • Cleansing treatments

In addition to these services, you may also be required to perform waxing and laser treatments.

With your in-depth knowledge of different skin types and products available on the market, you will be able to make personal recommendations to clients regarding which moisturizers or cleansers clients should use to maintain healthy skin.
