What degree do you need to be a social psychologist?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

You need to have either a Ph.D. in psychology or a master's degree in social psychology to be a social psychologist. Some professionals may also have degrees in sociology, communication studies, or other related disciplines.

Social psychology students explore how people interact with one another. Studies include intergroup dynamics, multiculturalism, attitude formation, discrimination, prejudice, and other topics that influence human interactions and attitudes.

The journey to becoming a social psychologist starts with obtaining an undergraduate degree in psychology, which takes four years on average. During this time, students lay the foundation for their future studies by learning essential skills and information about the field of psychology.

A master's degree is the next level of education after a bachelor's and typically requires 30-35 credit hours of coursework. In addition to classes, students also participate in practicums and internships that provide opportunities for teaching and research.

Practicums and internships are work experiences that may be completed at the end of your degree. Practical skills are acquired in this type of training, as well as problem-solving abilities, professional maturity, and interpersonal skills. Students will most often complete their graduate studies in two to three years.

Because space in social psychology doctorate programs is limited, applicants must be academically successful at both the undergraduate and graduate levels to even have a chance at getting in.
