What degree do you need to be a surgical assistant?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

You need a minimum of an associate's degree to be a surgical assistant. The requirements of surgical assistant programs vary and may require more education.

Aspiring surgical assistants must have earned an associate's or bachelor's degree in health-related science prior to being accepted into a surgical assistant program.

Experience as a military medic may also qualify you for acceptance into a surgical assistant program. These programs must be accredited by the CAAHEP. This accrediting agency works with the Association of Surgical Assistants and the American College of Surgeons to ensure the program meets certain standards.

Surgical assistant programs typically take two years to complete. During this time, students will also begin working in hospitals and surgery centers to gain experience. Three years of experience working in a surgical environment is required before being granted certification by one of the boards that oversee the profession.
