This question is about what a zoo keeper does.

What degree do you need to be a zookeeper?

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

You need a bachelor's degree in zoology to be a zookeeper. Bachelor's degrees in animal science or any other life science are also acceptable.

There aren't any schools that train zookeepers, and universities do not offer a degree specific to zookeeping. That's why life science degrees, like biology, zoology, wildlife biology, or evolutionary biology, are the most common degrees for a zookeeper to hold.

Universities or colleges that are connected to a local zoo may offer an associate's degree in zoo technology. This is a great opportunity for hands-on experience before, during, or after classes. Specific courses in animal training may also be available.

In addition, gaining experience working with animals is crucial to becoming a zookeeper. Many zookeepers start by volunteering or interning with animal organizations, such as the Humane Society.
