What degree do you need to be an electrician?
In general, you do not need a degree to become an electrician. You will be expected to have a high school diploma or GED. Afterward, most electricians choose to attend a technical or vocational school. During your training at school, you will learn how electrical systems work and how to stay safe.
Most programs will include an apprenticeship. An apprenticeship is required in order to become a licensed electrician. Apprenticeships will combine on-the-job training with classroom instruction and mentorship from master electricians. The entire process usually takes around four years to complete and approximately 6,000 to 10,000 hours.
Apprentices will receive wages during their training period but may be required to pay for books, work clothes, or tuition. In Michigan, apprentices receive $10 to $15 per hour plus benefits during their training and $40,000 to $80,000 per year plus benefits after graduation.
Once you have completed the apprenticeship program, you can apply for your license or certification. The requirements will vary by state, but you will be required to take a state licensing exam. These exams will test your comprehension of the National Electric Code and other on-the-job skills.
