What degree do you need to be an ER doctor?

By Roger Raber - Apr. 2, 2023

ER doctors need either an M.D. or D.O. degree and be residency-trained. Emergency medicine is a specialized area requiring licensed doctors to have extensive training in emergency room medicine.

Becoming a licensed doctor is similar regardless of the type of specialized medicine you intend to practice. Candidates must first earn a relevant undergraduate degree, followed by completing an accredited medical school.

Beyond their degrees, ER doctors must also complete three to five years of residency, depending on the hospital at which they are located.

After candidates complete medical school, they must participate in clinical rotations whereby they experience various medical specialties. Some residents now discover their preference for working in emergency medicine.
