By Zippia Team - Jan. 22, 2022

The degree needed to be a material engineer is a bachelor's degree in materials science and engineering or a related engineering field. Some material engineering programs offer a five-year degree that includes a master's degree.

Those interested in pursuing a material engineering degree can begin with high school courses in math, such as algebra, trigonometry, and calculus; in science, such as biology, chemistry, and physics; and computer programming.

After graduating from high school, aspiring materials engineers need to earn a bachelor's degree in materials engineering, ideally from a school accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

Do note that some schools also offer an accelerated bachelor's and master's combination degree for materials engineering.

Some colleges and universities offer a 5-year program leading to both a bachelor's and master's degree. A graduate degree allows an engineer to work as a postsecondary teacher or research and development.

Many colleges and universities also offer internships and cooperative programs in partnership with industry. In these programs, students gain practical experience while completing their education.
