What degree do you need to work with dolphins?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

There is no specific degree to work with dolphins, but dolphin trainers often hold degrees in biology, animal sciences, marine biology, or a related field. Education is extremely important if you want to become a dolphin trainer, as there are very limited job opportunities and lots of competition for any opening.

Along with education, experience around large animals is essential. Many trainers first begin working in zoology or at aquariums to familiarize themselves with various animal behaviors. An internship in a zoo setting can help to set you apart from other candidates, as well as give you that essential experience.

Most dolphin trainers begin with an apprenticeship where they work with experienced trainers. Although these apprenticeships are difficult to obtain, you can help to better your chances by making sure you are certified in SCUBA, CPR, and in basic first aid training.
