What does a bishop wear?

By Zippia Team - Jul. 31, 2023

A bishop's dress varies based on the occasion, but they always wear a pontifical ring and a pectoral cross for ceremonies.

The pontifical ring is presented to a bishop at his ordination and is typically made of gold and may or may not contain a stone. It is considered to be a symbol of authority and is worn on the right hand on all occasions. The ring is never to be removed, even when the bishop is wearing street clothes.

The ring serves as a symbol of the bishop's sacramental espousal to his diocese.

The pectoral cross is worn on the bishop's breast. It is suspended from a cord or chain and worn over his vestments. It is usually made of gold or another precious metal and sometimes contains precious jewels or saints' relics. Most bishops will wear a small pectoral cross and chain even when wearing street clothes.

A choir dress is worn by a bishop who is presiding at a ceremony. This outfit consists of a purple cassock, a mozzetta (a short cape), and a zucchetto (skull cap). They will also wear a white rochet. Purple is the color used in ceremonial dress with the exception of abbots who wear black, cardinals who wear red, and the pope who wears white.

The cassock is a close-fitted outer gown with purple sleeves. A mozzetta is made of silk or wool and reaches to the elbows and buttons down the front. It is worn over the rochet and is used in the bishop's own diocese as a sign of his jurisdiction. The rochet is a shortened lab that is made of linen or cotton and reaches to the knees.

The zucchetto is a small, round skull cap that is worn by ecclesiastics of various ranks. The bishop's zucchetto is purple.

When a bishop is at mass, he wears traditional mass vestments. In addition, he wears a miter, the ancient headdress of a bishop, and carries a crosier (a symbolic shepherd's staff). The miter is worn as a sign of their special dignity and is often ornamented. It typically has two lappets that will hang down the back.

The crosier is conferred upon a bishop at their ordination and is used by the bishop only within his diocese. It may only be used elsewhere with special authorization.
