What does a genetic counselor do on a daily basis?

On a daily basis, genetic counselors provide information and support to individuals and families who have genetic disorders or are at risk of inheriting a genetic condition.

They conduct detailed family histories to assess the chance of occurrence or recurrence of a genetic condition. They also interpret information about the disorder by analyze inheritance patterns. After interpreting the information, they then review available options with the patient or family.

A significant part of their job involves explaining complex scientific and medical details in language that a patient can understand. They also provide counseling to help patients make informed decisions and cope with how genetic diseases might affect them or their families.

On top of these duties, genetic counselors often engage in research activities related to the field of medical genetics and genetic counseling. They may also educate other healthcare professionals, students, and the public about genetic counseling.
