By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

A typical day for an electrician involves diagnosing and fixing a host of electrical problems, sometimes in unpleasant conditions, while keeping an inventory, completing work orders, and ensuring safety above all else.

Although there are many different types of electricians, most work a typically 9 to 5 schedule, with some working on weekends. Most of the day is spent tackling a long list of things to do, but also being flexible enough to handle when something goes wrong.

Electricians are many times required to play detectives, having e to check out the entire structure of the home or building in order to find what is wrong with it. For larger jobs and new installations, an electrician must also be able to read plans and blueprints and strictly follow safety and building codes.

A typical electrician may do the following during their day.

  • Repairing or replacing wiring

  • Diagnosing problems with connections and wiring

  • Testing electrical systems with various tools like ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes

  • Inspecting the electrical systems

  • Planning and interpreting wiring for diagrams

  • Connecting wiring to components, circuit breakers, and transformers

  • Assembling and testing appliances and wiring

Electricians can work indoors or outdoors. They can also work in factories, residential homes, or businesses. They can also work in a variety of conditions. Anywhere from large areas to cramped spaces. Electricians may go to different sites every day or stay in the same place for months. It is not uncommon for electricians to travel long distances to get to their sites.
