This question is about what a zoologist does.

What does a zoologist wear?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

A zoologist wears anything from plain cotton T-shirts to full diving gear, depending on the animals they are working with. When you are working with potentially large and dangerous animals, your clothing needs to be functional and protective.

A zoologist working with penguins will likely have a uniform that is similar to that of a commercial fisherman. These zoologists handle a lot of fish each day and they are responsible for feeding, cleaning, and observing the health of their birds. This can involve hand-feeding or feeding the penguins from a buffet tray.

Toting fish, scrubbing algae off exhibit rocks, and working in low temperatures requires specialized clothing. These zoologists usually wear rubber boots and fishing bibs to stay dry. Their top layers tend to consist of wool and cotton shirts.

Penguin zoologists will also need to go underwater to clean the tanks. This requires full face masks and scuba gear, including a wetsuit, hood, and gloves. In most circumstances, they will also wear a dive skin underneath to stay warm.

A zoologist who works with land animals such as monkeys or apes will dress very differently. They tend to wear what is considered the stereotypical zookeeper uniform. This consists of khaki pants or shorts, a zoo-branded polo shirt, and work boots.

Sometimes you must take extra precautions to avoid spreading human germs to animals and vice versa. To do this, zoologists will wear face masks and latex gloves, particularly during feeding times and when cleaning out the enclosure.

Most zoologists will arrive to work in their street clothes and change into their uniforms. This helps maintain the sterility of the clothing. They wash their uniforms at work and, in most cases, shower before they leave work, especially during cold and flu season.
