What does it mean if a doctor is not board-certified?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Jun. 12, 2023

When a doctor is not board-certified, this means that they do not hold current board certification.Board certification is a voluntary professional standard. This means that it is entirely possible that a fully licensed doctor can legally practice without holding board certification.

Board certification is for doctors to be certified as excellent in specific specialties. There are 24 boards, and some examples are specialties like pediatrics, dermatology, and surgery. You can practice these specialties without being certified, but it is uncommon.

In the United States, over 80% of practicing doctors are board-certified. This means that even though it is voluntary if you want to continue to be competitive in your field, it is often extremely important to hold board certification.
